User reviews 7 Review. Top review. Excellent satire. The country is somewhat of a mix between Iran and North Korea. It's like in many Muslim countries but in reverse. Especially women who are completely controlled by the state and its religious justification. Which is bullshit, but that's how it happens. It certainly takes an approach that lends itself to an open criticism of Islamic nations that engage in these practices, but any society that uses religion and accompanies it with extremism, is a cancer that should be eradicated.

It's difficult to shake the image of Terry Jones in a chador while watching Riad Sattouf's not-as-clever, not-as-savvy gender inverted social satire, Jacky in the Kingdom of Women. While the Python clan cast in for the purpose of comedy, Sattouf cross dresses his cast to make a point, to make lots of points. Actually, to make too many points. Many points that conflict with other points. Some pointed points.

Some pointedly pointless points. A lot of general pointlessness. Suffice to say, Jacky in the Kingdom of Women isn't particularly focused. Thankfully, putting the dubious messaging aside, the film is fun enough. Its gimmick and it's not robust enough to be much…. I just loved this gender-swapped world and its central fictional country, with its weird vocabulary and warped habits. I'd really like to see what the rest of that world is like, how the alteration of the gender roles impacts other countries as well.

Much praise is deserved by a movie willing to offend some people at the same time that it makes the audience think. The ending adds insult to injury but in a good way.
